Design Inspiration: 2019 Wedding Trends

05/15/2019

It’s officially spring, aka “wedding season”. All the brides out there, including myself, are digging through wedding binders and Pinterest boards to plan their perfect dream wedding.

Since every year brings new trends, it’s easy to panic and feel overwhelmed… I know I did. The panic was short-lived. I quickly found out just how fun and exciting wedding planning can be. 2019 is the year to make a statement with a special nod to tradition.

Color

Let’s start with color. Wedding palettes are becoming dark and edgy with a pop of color. If you’re having a hard time choosing one main color, you might consider choosing a range of colors or creating a theme for your wedding. A splash of color gives even the smallest details high impact!

Invitations

Designing the invitations has been my favorite part in planning my wedding. This crucial piece of paper sets the tone for the whole day. Invitations let your guests know if your wedding is formal or casual, day or evening, and if there is a theme to embrace.

First, you have to start with the text. This is a key component that will help make your day either formal or casual. The fonts and alignment you choose set this tone. Picking a calligraphy font and pairing it with a sans serif font, while center aligning your text lets your guests know you are having a traditionally formal wedding. On the other hand, choosing a brush font and complimenting it with another hand-written font and setting the text left aligned, can inform your guests that your wedding is more casual.

Incorporating your wedding color or theme into your invites is a great way to give your guests a sneak peek. They are eager to get a peek at what the wedding will be like, so why not send them a teaser with your invitations? When I was designing my invitations, I knew my main decorations were going to be Calla Lillies. I decided to give my guests a sneak peek and add a watercolor interpretation of my bouquet as the main design element on my invites. This design element paired with both my script and sans serif fonts, brought a romantic and formal feel to my invitations.

Flowers

Get your gardening gloves on (or call your florist), it’s time to make a one-of-a-kind dramatic florals! Florists are going to have a busy season creating impressive statement pieces. Flower walls and extravagant centerpieces will make your wedding unforgettable. Keep the tradition going by having bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids, of course. Maybe even add some flowers in your hair and on your cake. Think outside-of-the-box, (or should I say garden?) and look for unique flowers to use. A bouquet full of exotic green leaves and a few large colored flowers as a focal point is a hit this year. Or you could keep it minimalist and choose only one flower for the whole bouquet.

Cake

The tastiest part of the wedding and that iconic cake cutting photo is a must have in 2019. Keep it traditional with the standard tiered wedding cake but make it a showpiece. The goal for cakes this year is to make them look so good the caterers will not want to cut it. Add some stunning texture and color with watercolor painted designs, sugar flowers, or some of that greenery found in your flower wall and bouquets. This is a great spot to add some of the design elements from your invite. The watercolor flowers I added to my invitation would work really well on the wedding cake as a simple but elegant touch.

Dinner

Grazing tables are on the rise. These tables are taking place of waiters passing around hor d’oeuvres for cocktail hour. Not only are they filled with delicious snacks, they are Instagram-worthy, making them almost too pretty to eat… almost. Some grazing tables are even set up as a dessert or candy stations. Having a grazing table is a great way to break the tradition and keep your guests happy when you sneak away to take photos. Keep the tradition going when it comes to dinner by having a plated meal set on simple, elegant plates, next to silver candlesticks, and crystal stemware. Add some colored table runners or napkins to coordinate with your color or theme.

The spectacular thing about planning a wedding is choosing what fits you best. Take in some inspiration and, whatever you do, make your wedding on trend, just for you.
